Carry-in behavior is the behavior a person brings into the program from outside the program setting. This means the actions or patterns observed when they arrive originate from outside factors—past experiences, home or community stressors—rather than something that was created within the program itself. Recognizing carry-in behavior helps staff plan from the start with appropriate supports and de-escalation strategies, since the behavior is rooted in external circumstances the person is carrying with them. In contrast, behaviors generated within the program, those unrelated to the current context, or reactions tied specifically to reminders of past trauma describe different dynamics and aren’t the same as carry-in behavior.
